Welcome to the world of GYROZ Gyrocopters
GYROZ Formula 1+1
Two Seat Tandem Gyro (Now available) Award winner 2003 and 2005 Best New Gyro for Innovation
ABOUT Formula 1 + 1
The Tandem two seat Gyroz was formulated and derived over years of research and enquiries throughout the Sport aviation fraternity as to which would be the most practical type of Gyro that would appeal to most Sport Pilots and would be Pilots. It had to be comfortable, compact and capable of flying fast and slow, cruise at a reasonable speed, be light and easy to handle and to move around, have plenty of power to carry extra weight with some baggage and of course it must also be attractive. The semi enclosed mainly open Tandem type seemed to be the most favoured type Aircraft due to its compact, light and streamlined appearance typically derived from Trikes or Microlights.
ENGINES
Simonini Victor 2 Plus / 2 Stroke 102hp 2 cyl. Optional Hirth F30 fuel injected / 2 Stroke 102 hp 4 cyl Rotax 912 ULS / 4 Stroke 100hp 4 cyl. Why 2 Strokes? They are light, just 52kg. (Including exhaust, radiator, PSRU, Electric start and propeller) powerful and specifically built for the Ultralight Aircraft and for power to weight there is no other engine available that can produce the power and performance for the size and weight. After all we do want an aircraft that is light without the weight penalty and this is where people tend to get it wrong, thinking that bigger is better. Not so. Just a few seconds in a heavy Aircraft will show up the significant difference in performance between the two. A typical Gyroz Tandem with a 2 stroke engine weighs just 230 Kg empty including Rotors, one of the very few Aircraft that can legally carry more than it’s own empty weight, compare this with a converted Automobile engine, as has been tested, we end up with a Gyro that weighs in excess of 310 kg empty, even more if opted for a larger more powerful engine, plus the extra strengthening required to secure the extra weight, this obviously reduces the efficiency and carrying capacity of the Aircraft. This means the Aircraft is required to carry and fly 100% of the time with the equivalent weight of another passenger, (about 80kg plus).
Reliability.
The modern 2 stroke engine is a proven reliable engine, just look around, over 75% of the true Ultralight type Aircraft flying are doing it with proven reliability and rarely a breakdown, further more all 2 stroke factory built engines come with a WARRANTY, which is definitely not available with a converted Automobile engine. Furthermore, it is false economy to think that by purchasing a used Automobile engine and converting to fit an Aircraft is a cheap alternative; not so, the true cost of a conversion will inevitably exceed $8000.00 with a USED ENGINE not including labour costs, which makes it more expensive than the average cost of a new 2-stroke engine. All Simonini Engines are run up and tested for four hours on a dynamometer at the Simonini Factory prior to delivery, therefore no running in period is necessary after installation to Aircraft.
TECHNICAL
Gyroz gyrocopters are built to the stringent Australian Two Seat Standards and have been tested in all conditions including Student training and long distance flights. Flight tests carried out were beyond the requirements of standard gyros; the Designer, Builder, and Manufacturer derived these tests to prove the reliability, safety and stability of the Gyroz. Such is the set up and balance of the Gyroz, that it can be flown as a single seater from either the front or rear seat. Many students have been trained to Pilot certificate in our trainer prototype. The comments from all student Pilots has always been extremely favourable, especially the ease in which the Gyro flies and the uncompromised stability in all conditions, one of the best accolades is it’s simplicity in handling, “Hands free with simple throttle control”. “The gyro does the flying we just point it to where we want it to go”, are usual comments from Student Pilots
Components
Airframe – Rotors – Rotor Head – Rudders & Stabilizer – Controls. The Airframe is constructed with aircraft quality certified 6061T6 Aluminium. The Mast, Beam Axle, Struts and Braces are specially designed and exclusive to the Gyroz, these extruded sections are deliberately airfoil shaped to reduce drag and designed for added strength while maintaining the all important light weight, (part of the design award 2005) this construction and design makes this Gyro extremely strong yet flexible enough to absorb shock loads that may be encountered by hard landings or rough terrain usage.
ROTORS
Gyroz gyrocopters use our own Advanced Kinetics Rotors which are the only Rotors in production that are totally extruded in 6061T6 Alloy, this makes the AK Rotors without doubt the strongest most durable rotors available, proven over thousands of hours of use in extreme conditions and in the most severe usage such as Mustering in outback Australia, where some have achieved in excess of 2500 hours. The assembly of these rotors consists of an outer extruded shell with a solid internal Spar in the leading edge; this method also makes the rotors a redundant system. No tip weights or balance weights are used or are necessary. The added advantage of the Gyroz Rotors are: – Conformity to accuracy and consistency in shape, resistance to damage from nicks and scratches, damage from dropping, crushing, stone chips, hail and dust, unaffected by sunlight heat and UV Rays and extreme cold.
ROTOR HEADS
Rotor Heads are manufactured in house and are CNC machined to a tolerance of 2 microns from Aircraft Alloys such as 7075T651 and 6061T6. A double row deep groove main bearing specifically sourced for the Gyroz is used in all Rotor Heads. Strength and accuracy is a fundamental importance for smooth Rotor operation.
RUDDERS AND STABILISER
The twin fully flying rudders are 60% in clean air and the stabiliser is totally in clean air. The reasons for this are the results of testing all types of Tail, Rudder, and Stabiliser combinations. The proven system used on the Gyroz is verified as stated previously by the Student Pilots who have been fortunate to learn to fly in a Gyroz and their comments speak volumes for the reasons. Why twin Tail? This Rudder system is the most efficient. Because it is primarily unaffected by torque, prop wash and disturbed air passing around the fuselage, engine and occupants, especially in power off situations, and when landing in cross winds, effective in as low as 5 knot speed or winds, they are also self centering which means that when released they automatically return to their central position this allows the Pilot to relax and fly the Aircraft with their feet off the Rudder pedals. The Stabilizer is also proportionately sized to suit the Gyro and is totally in clean air, this allows the gyro systems to react and adjust appropriately in unison with the Stability and trim settings of the Aircraft, this makes the Aircraft exceptionally stable in the most extreme situations, easier and more relaxing to fly.
Controls
Ultra strong Teleflex cables which operate the cyclic control and rudder control system are tested to conform to all safety standards and are stronger than ordinary control systems, The reasons are simplicity and safety, there are less moving parts and junctions so less wear of components that are subjected to failure, this also means that the operations are clear of any obstructions and thereby reducing chances of snagging and objects getting caught in the control system, it also makes the appearance cleaner and compact without having rods and tubes vibrating and flapping. Unlike conventional control systems, one of the unique features of the Gyroz system is the separate pitch and roll connections in the Cyclic Control, this means that in the unlikely situation that one of the control systems were to fail the other would still operate and with the Gyroz trim system it would still be possible to land the aircraft safely, with a conventional control system there would be a complete and catastrophic loss of cyclic control. Optional Rear seat Control. An optional control system is also available which operates from the rear seat, (part of the innovation award) this control system is separate to the front cable operation and over rides the front control by 33%, the reason for this is to enable an Instructor to comfortably maintain a mechanical advantage over a Student in the front in an emergency. This option should be installed when ordering the Tandem Formula 1+1 to facilitate the necessary fittings to the Rotor Head and mountings. The Rudders are also deliberately operated by a single Teleflex cable, this also means that there are less wearing parts and cleaner lines eliminating the possibility of snags and fraying of exposed cables, the push pull type cable also allows the Pilot to operate and control the rudders with either pedal by using a heal and toe system. The Pedals are inter connected to the front nose wheel which is cambered to make steering direct light and easy, which means it too can be operated with one foot in a heal toe manner, a front wheel brake is fitted and is operated via a hand control with a parking brake facility which can be operated from the front and rear seat. A generously large diameter nose wheel is fitted to accommodate dips and ride over bumps comfortably.
COMFORT AND VISION
The Seating position and seats are designed with suitable cushioning and support to allow for comfortable long distance flights, one feature is the back rest on the front seat which is adjustable and can even be removed to allow for tall or long legged persons, the rake position can also be adjusted to suit each inpidual, a feature not found in any other Gyro. The streamlined Pod and cowling coupled with the generous windshield is positioned to allow the Pilot maximum vision and protection from the elements. The instrument Panel and Console are ergonomically positioned to view all instruments clearly and easily, all instruments fitted as standard are as specified for the Australian Two Seat Standards and for engine and flight management.
